Winter Getaways: 6 Warm Beach Escapes to Trade Snow for Sand
Somewhere around the second week of January, the scraper lives on the passenger seat and the sun sets before you leave work. That is usually when the search starts: where is it warm, how far is it, and do I need my passport? This winter getaways guide covers six beach escapes that stay warm through the coldest months, with the average January high for each, so you can pick the one that fits your trip.
How to Choose a Winter Beach Escape
Three questions narrow the list quickly:
- How warm is warm enough? A 74°F afternoon feels like a gift after a Boston winter. If you want true swimming weather, look for highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
- How long is the flight? From the East Coast, Florida and the Caribbean are a short hop. From the West Coast, Hawaii and Baja are closer.
- Passport or no passport? U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel between the mainland and Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mexico and Aruba require one.
1. Key West, Florida
Average January high: about 74°F. The closest of the six for most of the East Coast, and you can drive there. Expect bright, mild days that are perfect for bikes, long lunches and sunset at Mallory Square. The water can feel cool to some swimmers in midwinter, so this is a sun-and-stroll trip more than a snorkel trip.
2. San Juan, Puerto Rico
Average January high: about 83°F. No passport needed for U.S. citizens, the U.S. dollar is the currency, and winter is the drier, sunnier part of the year. Split your days between the beach in Condado or Isla Verde and the blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan.
3. Honolulu, Hawaii
Average January high: about 79°F. The easy pick from the West Coast. Days are warm and steady, the sea sits around 76°F, and you can watch the big winter surf on the North Shore after a calm morning in Waikiki.
4. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Average January high: about 79°F. Cabo is one of the driest options on this list, with rain rarely in the January forecast. Evenings cool to around 60°F, so pack one light layer for dinner by the marina. It is also whale-watching season.
5. Aruba
Average temperature: low 80s year-round. Aruba sits outside the main hurricane belt and has steady trade winds, which keep the heat comfortable. Calm, clear water on the west coast makes it a strong choice if you mainly want to swim and float.
6. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Average winter temperature: about 77°F. Another no-passport option for U.S. citizens, with the U.S. dollar and plenty of direct flights. Base yourself on St. Thomas and take the ferry to St. John for a day of quiet beaches.
What to Pack for a Warm Winter Trip
Whichever island you choose, the bag is mostly the same. Keep the palette short so everything mixes, and leave the winter coat in the car at the airport if you can.
- A sun hat you can wear on the plane, or one that folds flat into your carry-on.
- One roomy tote for towel, sunscreen and a book, and one small bag for evenings.
- Flat sandals for the beach and one pair with a little more polish for dinner.
- One light layer for cool evenings and cold planes.
